Thank you for visiting Jewel's Rabbitry located in the garlic capitol of the world, Gilroy, California. Gilroy is home to garlic and great Havanas!
My husband and I both have grown up in the area on small farms and have raised a variety of livestock while participating in 4-H and FFA. Growing up I showed Standard Chinchilla Rabbits, New Zealand Whites and Californians as 4-H projects and competed at the local fairs (along with sheep and dairy). I returned to raising rabbits when our children became interested again through 4-H. Our children took it a step further and showed at the state and national levels with their Holland Lops and Havanas, and a few other breeds scattered in for fun. My son Kevin won the National Havana Youth Show in 2004 in Colorado with a senior chocolate doe. After they moved on to other interests, we began to disburse the rabbits to other breeders and downsized. Somewhere in this time frame I was talked into staying with rabbits and began competing and learning about Havanas.
Several wonderful breeders provided me with good information, great foundation animals and fun competition when I began competing again. These breeders are Dera Oldofredi of Hares Everywhere, Kelsey Peirce of IronStar Havanas, and Brad and Katie Boyce of Wildfire Rabbitry.
A few years have passed and a wonderful group of friends--- Kathi-Dera-Gail and myself have affectionately become known as the 'Old Crows' and now compete all over the state in our chosen breeds. We are competitors on the table and great friends off. What more could you ask for in a hobby?
We are always excited to assist an up and coming Havana Breeder!
Hope to see you at the Show Table!
